Artist statement:

“I Can’t Breathe” is a poignant artwork that was created in 2020 amidst the pandemic. 2020 was a year filled with numerous challenges, and, as a Nigerian, my reality was especially difficult to endure due to the tragic events at the Lekki Toll Gate, where young individuals like myself were brutally shot by army officials. This artwork serves as a reflection of the emotions I felt during that time, reminding me that it easily could have been me who suffered such a fate.

Godwin Kalu, a versatile Nigerian individual, embodies the essence of an artist in every dimension. With fervour for painting, music, and 3D animation, he extends his talents beyond conventional boundaries. While having a background in architecture from Caleb University, Lagos State, he opted to channel his enthusiasm into diverse artistic avenues.
