Artist’s statement:

In 2008, my world shrank to the size of a bedroom as I spent a year recovering from a serious injury. My second floor window looked out at a cherry tree, and over the course of a quiet and isolated spring season, I watched raindrops slide down the glass, bare branches bloom with new growth, the emergence of pink filigree. I wept through months of healing, feeling physical anguish, in grief that I’d never before stopped to notice the immensity of natural beauty so wildly available, and with gratitude that Life had fully captured my attention and offered me a focus outside of myself. When I was well enough to start taking short trips into the outside world, I took small steps into my backyard garden, and, with my camera, captured the swirl of blossoms, the whorl of a snail shell, the radiance of green buds and black earth. Since then, photography has become a meditative practice, reminding me to slow down, pay attention, look up and out, and to highlight the humor, playfulness, tenderness, and wisdom of the world (qualities I have recently begun to more deeply reflect by titling my work). Flowers, landscapes, and architecture are my subjects, and their lines, colors, angles, and the surprising stories they tell call my attention to the mystery, abundance, and generosity of the world, even in its smallest footprint.
